Clothespin Butterfly Magnets

So many facets about springtime make it magical. As the weather begins to warm up, one of the most wondrous sights is watching caterpillars turn into butterflies! Nature, WOW! We’ve put together a fun little craft that’s both educational and fun. The initial steps focus on the caterpillar and then the craft evolves into a beautiful butterfly. It’s also a functional craft since mom can hang art, schedules, and report cards from the little ones!

Step 1: Gather your materials. You will need: colorful chenille craft balls, colorful tissue paper, some household spring-loaded clothespins, a few magnetic strips, a glue stick, and a few pipe cleaners.

Step 2: With safety scissors, cut the pipe cleaner into 2-inch segments. Choose your favorite color tissue paper and pinch in the middle, mimicking the look of butterfly wings. Apply a thin layer of glue to the clothespins and firmly press one magnetic strip on each one.

Step 3: Now you are ready to make your cute colorful caterpillars! Choose whichever colors you or your little one love best (pick up to 5) and apply a layer of glue to the other side of the clothespin. Lay all 5 on the clothespin, press firmly, and let dry for about 4 minutes.

Step 4: Once the craft balls have dried and are secured, open your clothespin and take your tissue paper wing and clamp the clothespin onto each wing. Once the wings are clamped, open the clothespin again and position the 2-inch antenna between the first and second craft ball. Bend the antenna forward so that it points outward from the head.
