Apple Scented Play-Dough

What kid doesn’t enjoy playdough? None, that’s who. Here’s a simple DIY playdough that’s colorful, smells great, and last for up to 2 months. And if the little ones happen to eat some, it’s perfectly safe for their tummies. Let’s get rolling!

Supplies:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil
  • Green and red food coloring
  • Apple scented oil (optional)
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon spice (optional)
  • Cookie cutters (optional)

All the supplies including flour, salt, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar, 1 cup of water ,2 tablespoons sunflower oil, Green and red food coloring, Apple scented oil (optional), 1 tsp of cinnamon spice (optional), Cookie cutters (optional)

STEP 1:

Add flour, salt, and cream of tartar to a mixing bowl and stir.

STEP 2:

In a medium saucepan, add water and sunflower oil, then heat. Once boiling, remove the saucepan from heat.

STEP 3:

Pour the dry mixture into the hot water and stir until it forms a firm dough ball.

STEP 4:

Remove the dough from the pan and allow it to cool for 5 minutes. Once cool, knead the dough for a few minutes until softened and divide into 3 equal portions.

STEP 5:

Time to add the apple scent! Add ½ teaspoon of apple flavoring to each portion of dough you wish to scent. Did you know that there are both red and green apple flavoring options? It’s true! You can try different color and scent combos.

STEP 6:

Up next is the pop of color. Add a few drops of green or red food coloring to each portion of dough. You can leave one colorless if you like.

STEP 7:

You can knead in the color and scent by hand, but that can get messy. For a tidier alternative, place each portion into its own ziploc bag, then knead to distribute the color and scent.

Bonus Step:

Got some apple-shaped cookie cutters handy? You can roll out the dough and press them into fun apple shapes, or any shape your kids love!

When playtime is done, the dough will keep for up to 2 months in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
